the car park.

I jumped in the car and discovered it was an automatic transmission.

I’d never driven one before.

No problem I thought, should be easier

I started the car and I couldn’t get the gear shift into drive.

It just would NOT move.

I tried moving the gear stick sideways, using two hands on the shift (yes I know), pushing down on it…

But nothing could get the bloody thing out of ‘park’

Eventually an older bloke who had been watching me knocked on the window.

He said ‘you have to put your foot on the brake’

Which I did and the gear lever moved effortlessly into ‘drive’.

The point is, I had had passed my UK driving test (which apparently is one of the more difficult tests in the world), owned my own car and thought I knew what I was doing around motor vehicles.

But I lacked that one piece of knowledge – putting my foot on the bloody brake to change gear in an automatic car.
