ChatGPT has skyrocketed in popularity and its ability to proficiently generate text that’s readable and logical – with just a few prompts… But this tool is more versatile than writing articles, blog posts, etc. With this article, I will show you how to use Chat GPT for lead generation and take your marketing efforts to the next level.
By wielding ChatGPT creatively, you can use it to tackle many marketing objectives/chores that go far beyond just content creation. Let’s ask it what it can do…
From the image above, you can see that ‘Lead Generation’ (circled) is one of the tasks that ChatGPT can assist you with.
Gone are the days when you had to spend hours brainstorming and struggling to write sales copy. With ChatGPT, you can get all the necessary ‘components’ in place in record time.
And you’ll learn exactly how to do it in this article… step-by-step. It doesn’t get any easier than this!
Define Your Objective
Before even building an email list, you must know why you’re building one. You don’t want to just build a list for the sake of having one.
For this article, we’ll assume that our end goal is to promote a popular digital product on ClickBank – The Smoothie Diet. It shows good stats and from the gravity, we can tell that other affiliates are doing well with it.
Now that we have an objective, it’s time to put the ‘5-Step List Building Plan’ to work!
You’re probably thinking… “What’s that plan? I’ve never heard of it!”
Read on…
The 5-Step List Building Plan
Since this is a step-by-step guide, we’ve broken down the process into 5 steps. Later on, we’ll show you a few variations. But for the most part, you MUST nail these 5 steps down – if you want your list building efforts to yield fruit.
We’ll be enlisting ChatGPT’s assistance for each step along the way. For now, just familiarize yourself with the plan:
Let’s begin!
Step #1 – Define Your Target Audience
Since our objective is to promote The Smoothie Diet, we’ll take a look at the sales page for the product here: https://go.smoothiediet.com/
Just by looking at it, you can tell that the product is trying to appeal to a female audience. The colors used are pink and green. The testimonials on the official page are by women. This is a weight loss product for women.
This is our target audience.
Let’s assume you can’t figure out who your target audience is. In this case, we’ll ask ChatGPT for help.
First, we’ll use a prompt like this so that ChatGPT gets ‘warmed up’…
Next, we’ll copy and paste the sales copy from the official website… and ask ChatGPT to analyze it.
(If your sales copy is too long, you can use a tool like ChatGPT Splitter to split up the prompt.)
And this is ChatGPT’s response…
You’ll notice that this AI tool said, “it can be assumed that it is applicable to both men and women.”
That’s true… but the sales copy targets women. This highlights a very important point – ChatGPT doesn’t always get it right.
In many cases, you’ll have to use your discernment when trying to spot nuances and subtlety. An AI tool is not a human. You are… and you’re smarter than it.
So trust your instincts.
That said, we have now defined a target audience. The next step will be to ask ChatGPT to give us a list of pressing problems that our audience will be facing.
People with problems are often eager (or even desperate) to solve them.
Later, when you’re creating your lead magnet (freebie), you’ll be offering something that addresses these problems.
This will ensure that visitors to your landing page find your offer of value – and eagerly sign up. Most sane people will sign up to your offer if they think it can solve their problems.
Let’s ask ChatGPT to give us a list of problems the smoothie folks dealing with weight issues will commonly face…
Wow! That’s a lot of problems – but we’ll only focus on one.
The key to making your lead magnet appealing and more targeted will be to ‘niche down’ and focus on addressing just one problem.
For this example, we’ll choose problem #4 – ‘Cravings for unhealthy food’
You could choose any of the problems above, but we’re going with #4. Once you understand the concept, it doesn’t really matter which one you choose. You can still get positive results.
Time for step #2…
Step 2: Decide on a Lead Magnet
If you have no idea what to give away as a freebie, you can ask ChatGPT for suggestions. We’ll open a new chat and use this prompt:
Fantastic! Now we just need to choose one format… and we’ll go with ‘reports’ for this example… but you could choose checklists, etc. It’s up to you.
Remember the problem we decided to go with earlier?
Yes – ‘Cravings for unhealthy food’
Now we’ll ask ChatGPT to give us ideas for a lead magnet report that addresses this problem.
We’ll start by giving it some context…
And that’s all we need to do for now. Let’s move on to step #3…
Step 3: Create the Lead Magnet
In this step, we’re creating our short report… and guess what every report needs?
Yes – a title! Let’s get ChatGPT to create one for us.
Now you have many interesting titles to choose from. We’ll go with title #2 – Smoothie Secrets: Conquer Food Cravings and Watch the Weight Melt Away!
We added the word ‘food’ to the subtitle to make it just that little bit better.
Time to outline the report. Yoo hoo! ChatGPT…. Get readyyyyy!
ChatGPT gives us an awesome outline…
With this outline, you have 2 choices:
- You can write the report yourself using the outline for reference
- You can ask ChatGPT to write the report for you.
In this example, we’ll ask ChatGPT to write the report for us. We’ll do this in ‘blocks’.
Asking ChatGPT to write out an entire report at once will use up the tokens fast and we’ll need to keep regenerating responses. So it’s better to do it the ‘slower’ way.
When it comes to ChatGPT, the mantra is – “Slow is smooth… and smooth is fast.”
Let’s start with the introduction…
The introduction is good but the paragraph is a bit too long. To improve readability, we’ll ask ChatGPT to break it down into smaller paragraphs… and format the output.
The introduction is done. Now for the body. Since we’re looking to create a report that’s about 1,200-1,500 words long, we’ll ask ChatGPT to expand on each point.
Let’s do a word count check at Wordcounter (https://wordcounter.net/) and see if it got the word count right.
That’s 1,494 words. Slightly longer than we expected. From here, you can manually edit the content and shorten it… or ask ChatGPT to do it for you.
ChatGPT even wrote us a conclusion, all on its own. Taking liberties… but we’ll let it be. Can’t be too hard on ChatGPT, can we?
This conclusion is good, but the goal of the lead magnet is to get us sales.
We’re promoting The Smoothie Diet… so we need a call to action (CTA) to tempt readers to click and visit the sales page.
Let’s ask ChatGPT to create one for us…
That’s brilliant! You can hyperlink the words, “explore The Smoothie Diet” or “Start your smoothie transformation now” and link either phrase to the sales page for the smoothie diet. Of course, you’ll be using your affiliate link here.
Get Image Ideas from ChatGPT
A report that’s all words will be dull and monotonous. Sprinkling a few images within your report will add a touch of color to it… and keep the readers more engaged.
If you’re wondering what images to use, you can ask ChatGPT for ideas…
Excellent. You can always find royalty-free images on Pixabay or use stock photo site like Depositphotos.
Besides images that are used with the text, you’ll also need a cover image for your report.
Let’s ask ChatGPT for ideas…
So it gave us two ideas. We’ll choose the first one and ask it to create instructions for our graphic designer.
If you’re a graphic designer, you may not need this… but if you’re hiring someone from a site like Fiverr, it’ll help to give them an idea of what you need.
We followed ChatGPT’s idea and instructions and this is what we came up with…
Looks outstanding! Let’s see what we’ve done so far…
We’re halfway there! Only 2 steps left…
Step 4: Set Up the Landing Page
Before you start building the landing page (opt-in page), you’ll need some sales copy for that page. You know where we’re going with this…
Yes – ChatGPT to the rescue!
It’s important to understand that we’re having an ongoing conversation with ChatGPT. It remembers whatever you told it earlier.
So when you ask it to create a headline, it has all the background information/context from earlier to refer to… and create sales copy that’s relevant.
Do NOT start a new chat. Just keep the old one going when creating your sales copy.
Here are 5 headlines ChatGPT gave us. The 5th one looks good. So, we’ll use it: “Free Report Reveals: The Smoothie Shortcut to Defeating Food Cravings and Achieving Your Dream Body!”
Now we may need more sales copy depending on how you want your sales page to look like. While this report is not about building landing pages, if you’re interested to get ideas on creating landing pages, you can check out this resource: https://convertkit.com/resources/blog/product-landing-pages
For this ‘case-study’, we’ll just go with a standard page that has an image of the report, a few bullet points and a download button.
In the image above, you can see that ChatGPT’s ‘bullet points’ are quite long. This tool does like to babble.
So we’ll ask it to shorten these points.
Perfect!
An Important Point to Note:
Any time you feed ChatGPT a prompt, it’ll give you a response that it thinks is best. You do NOT need to settle for the first response it gives you.
There are a couple of ways to improve the responses until you get what you want.
- You could click on the ‘Regenerate response’ button – over and over.
- You could edit your original prompt and give ChatGPT more details/requirements.
- Or you could follow up the response with another prompt, like what we did earlier when we asked it to shorten the bullet points.
Just by editing your prompts and iterating the process, you’ll inevitably get a response you’re happy with. The road to ChatGPT success is paved with repetition.
Back to our copywriting…
So we have a headline and bullet points. Now we need a call-to action asking the visitors on our landing page to join our email list.
ChatGPT’s response…
Well, we have most of what we need.
Now it’s time to build the landing page…
The best way to do this quickly and easily will be to use a page builder. There are many popular ones on the market such as:
- OptimizePress: https://www.optimizepress.com/
- LeadPages: https://www.leadpages.net/
- Thrive Architect: https://thrivethemes.com/architect/
- ClickFunnels: https://www.clickfunnels.com/
- Elementor: https://elementor.com/
If you already have a page builder, you just need to be proficient at using it. Or get any one from the list above and start building out your page.
For our example, we’ll use LeadPages, and create an opt-in page. This is a screenshot of our page:
You’ll notice that we added the word ‘Discover’ to the headline and moved the words ‘Free report reveals:” above to make it a pre-headline.
We also used a yellow ‘Download Now!’ button to grab attention.
The headline and bullet points were all generated by ChatGPT. We skillfully copied and pasted them. Yes, we did.
But here’s the most important point you must note!
Congruency between the landing page and sales page is vital for boosting conversions of an affiliate product.
So… our landing page must look similar to the official sales page of The Smoothie Diet. The best way to do this is to use similar colors for our page.
That’s what we did with the landing page above. The official website of The Smoothie Diet looks like this:
Both pages look like they’re related. It doesn’t have to be an exact match, but it has to be close.
This will ensure that your subscribers are more receptive when they’re presented with the Smoothie Diet offer.
Now it’s time for the final step… which also happens to be the most important one…
Step 5: Drive Traffic to Your Landing Page
You could have the most beautiful landing with a fantastic lead magnet… BUT if no one sees the page, you’ll not get a single subscriber.
While this is not a report on traffic generation, here’s are few tips and pointers to bear in mind:
- It will take longer to generate organic free traffic (as compared to paid traffic).
- Pick ONE traffic generation method and focus on it. Do NOT scatter your efforts over multiple methods.
- Free traffic will require consistent effort from you over time.
Now that we’ve established these points, let’s ask ChatGPT for suggestions on promoting our landing page.
In point #2, it suggested guest posting.
Let’s ask it how it can help us here…
Wow! It can even suggest sites to guest post on. Let’s put it to the test and ask it to generate ideas for guest posts.
Now we have ideas for guest posts… And are you thinking what we’re thinking?
You bet! You can even ask ChatGPT to write these guest posts for you. You can ‘fine-tune’ those posts later before submitting them to the sites.
If you’re wondering how to find sites to guest post on, just ask ChatGPT! It’s that simple…
Since ChatGPT is an AI language model, it doesn’t have real-time access to the internet and can’t browse websites.
So you’ll just need to do it manually and use the search terms it provided you.
It can be intimidating reaching out to website owners. What will you even tell them?
Nothing. You’ll let ChatGPT do the talking for you. Let’s ask it to write an outreach email for us…
Beautiful!
You can just use this ChatGPT’s professional email and reach out to website owners.
Do you see how easy ChatGPT makes this process?
Once you understand this concept, you’ll know that you can leverage it for other traffic methods too. If you choose to do social media marketing, just tell ChatGPT what you wish to do and ask it how it can help you.
From there, you’ll use it to create content for you. The more content you strategically use, the more eyeballs you’ll get… and the more traffic you’ll get on your landing page.
Which will lead to more sign ups and subscribers.
Congrats! You’re officially building an email list!
Just make sure you choose a reputable autoresponder like Aweber, ConvertKit or GetResponse. It doesn’t matter which company you go with, as long as they have good deliverability (and allow affiliate marketing).
Let’s Wrap It Up!
In this article, we showed you how to create a short report to use as a lead magnet. But if you wish to create a checklist, you can do that too.
This shows that you’re only limited by your creativity. There are so many variations – but the fundamental concepts you learned in this case-study apply across the board.
If you follow the 5-Step Plan and use ChatGPT accordingly, you’ll have no problems building a list – and you’ll do it in a fraction of the time.
Give ChatGPT a spin today and start building your list as soon as you can.
It’s an asset that will pay dividends over and over, if you leverage it wisely.
